After four years as an operator in Finnebrogue’s Automation team, Stephen (pictured left) knew he wanted more. Determined to progress his career and take on new challenges, he set his sights on becoming an engineer. Thanks to Finnebrogue’s support and a Level 2 apprenticeship at SERC, he is now on the path to achieving his ambition.
Stephen’s apprenticeship has given him the opportunity to develop his skills both in the classroom and in the workplace. At South Eastern Regional College (SERC), he enjoys hands-on learning in the workshop, building his technical knowledge and practical abilities. Meanwhile, at Finnebrogue, he gains invaluable experience working alongside skilled engineers, tackling both mechanical and electrical tasks, and applying what he learns in real-world scenarios.
“The apprenticeship has been the perfect step for me,” Stephen said. “I wanted to push myself further, and this opportunity has allowed me to do just that. The balance between study and hands-on experience is incredibly rewarding, and I’m constantly learning new things. Finnebrogue has been really supportive of my development, and I’m excited to take the next step to Level 3 in September.”
Balancing work and study is no small task, but Stephen is fully committed. While SERC is in term time, he spends three days working at Finnebrogue and one full day studying. During mid term breaks, he works four full days at Finnebrogue, gaining even more experience on the job. His dedication and passion for engineering are clear, and his goal is to complete his apprenticeship and secure a permanent role as an engineer at Finnebrogue.
“I love being able to work on both mechanical and electrical tasks, learning from experienced engineers and growing my skill set every day,” Stephen added. “My goal is to become an engineer at Finnebrogue and play an important role in the team.”
