Finnebrogue hosts anti-bullying “Speak Out Champions” workshop with local schools

Finnebrogue hosted the “Speak Out Champions” workshop for post-primary students – taking action to help support the prevention of bullying type behaviour in schools. The workshop aligns with Finnebrogue’s commitment to wellbeing, emphasising respect, inclusivity, and positive behaviour in the workplace – values we champion both within our company and in our communities.

The half-day workshop – organised by the Education Board and area learning coordinators – brought together four students from each school – Knockevin School, Blackwater Academy, Lecale Trinity College, Saintfield High School, Ardmore School, St Malachy’s Castlewellan, Down High School and Shimna Integrated College – along with supporting staff members, to explore ways to act as positive role models and promote a culture of care and respect to prevent bullying-type behaviour in schools.

Just as schools with anti-bullying programmes and mental health support, help reduce stress and anxiety among students, workplaces like Finnebrogue, where there is a focus on wellbeing, can improve employee morale and reduce stress. Schools and workplaces that discourage bullying and other negative behaviours help create cultures where individuals feel secure and respected. By embedding these principles early, schools help prevent the spread of toxic behaviours that can resurface later in workplaces. It sets a standard of zero tolerance for harassment, discrimination, or exclusion, which is crucial for maintaining a positive work culture.

Workshop Goals and Structure

The event was structured in three parts to provide a comprehensive approach to addressing and preventing bullying:

Understanding Bullying Behavior
Student leaders engaged in discussions about what constitutes bullying-type behavior and why addressing it is essential for a healthy school environment (and preparing them for the workplace).

Role Modeling Positive Actions
Participants learned the importance of acting as “upstanders” in their school communities. Through activities and discussions, they gained insight into how they can set examples that inspire their peers.

Taking Action to Promote Kindness and Care
The final segment empowered students with actionable strategies to encourage compassion and empathy in their school settings, fostering an inclusive and supportive atmosphere for all.

The students who attended were from a variety of ability and leadership backgrounds, and this diverse representation enabled rich dialogue and collaboration, fostering new ideas that each student can take back to their school community.

“Finnebrogue is dedicated to promoting wellbeing, both on-site and in the communities we serve. We know it is important to create environments where people feel valued, respected, and supported. We look forward to seeing how these student leaders pave the way for positive change in their schools.”
